Killer Guides’ WoW Mage Guide is updated for patch 2.4. Not a lot was changed, but there were some improvements regarding talents, gems and leveling. Updated again in August 2008 with some small fixes to reflect the latest nerfs and buffs, it now stands at 172 pages.
The guide is not perfect, but the class-defining chapters are the strongest. Here are my thoughts on the guide:
The most important considerations for a class are, in my opinion, talents, spells, race, and gameplay strategies (i.e. how to PvP, solo, group etc.) Those are the areas where this guide is best. When you get further away from mage specific stuff, like leveling and making gold and doing battlegrounds, it’s not quite as good.
A lot of focus lies on the game playing tactics, including solo, group, raid, battlegrounds and arenas. You’ll want to re-read these sections after testing and playing a bit. I’ve returned to many chapters over and over again, and I always get some new piece of advice I can try out. The instance strategies could have been a bit stronger, though.
With the latest update, almost everything is accurate in the guide. So you can basically trust the builds and advice.
Sadly, with the latest update of the guide the discussion of all spells and abilities was removed, and replaced with more info on talents. But talents are very important and I welcome the in-depth discussion of those (every talents is described and rated for usefulness in raids, groups, solo and pvp play). Though when it comes to talent builds there are 15 to choose from, which is too many in my opinion (many are variations on the same theme). Sometimes less is more.
The chapter on making gold has nowbeen updated for TBC, which is great. These gold tips will help you make gold for all your mounts. As for leveling, well… the chapter is 14 pages long so you can’t expect it to be super-detailed. Nevertheless there are some good tips on areas and talents for leveling, and where to find quests.
The last chapter addresses mage gear. Everything is linked to wow.allakhazam.com which is good. It is also updated with lvl 60-70 gear now which was missing earlier, as well as gems for different situations.
Overall this is a good but not perfect guide. 8/10 in my opinion. Click here for more information.
